Match Angler August 10 Sunday August 15th Peg 139 is situated at the wood end, second peg in and end peg in the match, I have had a run of end pegs this year which always seem to be the wrong end on the day and this match was no different, as the slight prevailing wind was benefiting the middle and road end pegs. Tactic's for the day were pole lines at 9m and 5m and margin pegs. I would start long and work my way in to the margin pegs fishing pellet and paste. The match started off quietly for me and the other anglers at my end of the pool with only the odd small carp being caught. At the end of the first hour I had a 4lb carp to go with half a dozen small carp and Tench. The next hour saw a few more small carp and another 4lb carp graced the net at 1pm, giving me approx 20lb by 2pm, which although not great was actually good for my end of the pool. Then as often happens when you are pegged at the wrong end, as soon as it gets time for the fish to start feeding, they swim off to the other end of the pool leaving you with little to catch. I struggled for a dozen small carp for the rest of the match, finally weighing in 29lb, behind weights of 56lb, 45lb and 35lb. Although I did reasonably well on my pool, to put things into perspective my weight beat no one on pool 2 or Suez underlying the superiority of these 2 lakes over pool 5 Sunday August 22nd Following recent rain, the weather was forecast to be warm and sunny which affected my choice of tactics, it would be back to trying to catch shallow for the first half of the match and then a switch to the margins would be made. The first half of the match saw me struggle for approx 20lb, which does not seem much to show for 3 hours fishing, however, this weight was as good as it got on my half of the pool on what was turning out to be a hard day. At 1.30pm I tried the margin's with no success so went back out shallow for another 30mins for 2 more small carp. At 2pm I decided it was make or break time and would spend the rest of the match trying to make the margins work. Despite another quiet hour, I did manage to put a late run of decent sized fish together in the last hour on pellet and paste to end up with 52lb. As other anglers around me had also managed a few late fish, I was unsure how my weight would fare, as it turned out, none of the other anglers in my section, or the section opposite managed to break 50lb, in fact my weight was second on the pool behind Gary Skerritt's 55lb weight from the road end. Elsewhere, the venue fished slightly better, so pool 1 did not feature any anglers in the main frame, with my weight ending up 8th overall. Saturday August 28th Tactic's for the day where influenced by the cool, wet and windy weather that had been forecast for the weekend, gone were any thoughts of fishing shallow, so I subbed those rig's with a rig for fishing on the bottom at about 7m. The rest of the rigs were set up to fish the margins and 5m. Bait wise it is still a pellet and paste attack for me and I started off fishing at 7m and expected to work my way back to the margins. The match started off slowly for me and everyone else on the pool as sport definitely took a downturn for the worse. By continually rotating the 7m and 5m lines I gradually managed a few bites but still only had barely 20lb by 2pm. The fish did manage to turn up on the close lines in the last 90 mins to give me 48lb at the weigh in. Although I had struggled to catch for most of the match, my weight was actually good enough for 3rd on the pool and 2nd in the section, beaten only by anglers at the wood end of the pool. As I feared though, pool 2 dominated the match with my weight only good enough for 9th overall and the top 4 all coming from pool 2 Sunday August 29th Rigs for the day covered both near and far side margins and a track rig was also set up. The weather before the match started, was reasonably warm and bright, prompting me to set up a couple of shallow rigs just in case. Needless to say I never used them as after 30 mins and 3 small carp in the net, the heavens opened and the next 2 hours saw me fish in the worse conditions for along time. During this time I caught very little as the torrential rain and near gale force winds made it virtually impossible to fish my peg. Eventually, I managed to get a few fish from the inside margins and just when I thought I was going to put a weight together the bites died off and I was left with only 29lb to show for my efforts. Despite putting such a low weight on the scales my weight was actually the 3rd best catch on front Suez and again I ended up 2nd in the section, beaten by sheltered end peg 2. Front Suez did not feature in the frame and only provided 1 angler in the top 8 as pool 2and back Suez dominated the top weights!
Even though it is half way through the month already this was my first match of the month, so I was looking forward to a good draw, loads of fish and an envelope full of money. There were three lakes included in the match, front Suez, and pools 2 and 5. Anywhere on pool 2 or Suez was the order of the day, so I drew peg 139 on pool 5, and with it any chance of doing any good in the match as unfortunately nowadays pool 5 just cannot compete with the other lakes included in the match scene.
After the previous weeks match I was looking forward to decent draw this week and got peg 3 on pool 1. With pool 2 and Brewsters included in this weeks match it would be interesting to see which pool had the best form
This was my first Saturday match for several weeks and with pool 1 and pool 2 included in this weeks match, I wanted a draw on pool 2. Wanting a draw on pool 2 and getting a draw on pool 2, is easier said then done for me recently and I soon found myself sitting on peg 12 on pool 1!
The following day saw me back at Cudmore for another go at the draw bag, again pool 2 was in along with front and back Suez. Surely this time a draw on pool 2 would be forthcoming, eh no, peg 13 on front Suez would be my home for the day, leaving me not best pleased to say the least.
